Work flow diagram

A work flow diagram, shows all the project’s products in sequence, including those coming into the project from outside. This gives a natural structure for part of the risk analysis. Simply go through the project products one at a time asking ‘What could go wrong with producing this product or with this external supply?’

Risk checklist

The risk checklist is simply a standard list of known risks grouped by category. You can buy commercial ones, but making your own for your organisation is even better. You identify all the risks you can by using other techniques, and then use the Risk Checklist to see whether you have missed anything. Don’t use the checklist first, or you’re likely to get focused on it and so miss a new risk that’s staring you in the face but isn’t on the list.

Decision tree

A decision tree allows you to map options and cost them against the probability of them occurring. The result helps evaluate the best course of action. Figure 6-4 gives an example with two main choices of supplier. The actual cost for each then depends on whether that supplier delivers on time, early (in which case they get a bonus payment) or late (in which case there is a deduction from the cost for the inconvenience). The known history of the two suppliers allows estimation of the probability of each being early, on time or late.
